Active Flag
The Active School Flag (ASF) is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. The process aims to get more schools, more active, more often.
Schools wishing to achieve the ASF begin the process by self-evaluating their current provision across 3 areas: Physical Education, Physical Activity and Partnerships.
Schools must also organise an Active School Week programme and commit to having it as part of their annual school calendar. Schools that can say ‘yes’ to all of the ASF success criteria will be awarded with the active flag.
The flag remains valid for a period of 3 years after which time schools will be invited to re-apply.
ASF is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland.
We were awarded our first flag in June 2017 and are in the process of renewing it.

Partnerships

ASF schools work in partnership with others to promote a physically active school community. Pupils, parents and community all work together
 Physical Education
(Aquatics & LAND PAWS, Athletics, Dance, Games, Gymnastics and Outdoor & Adventure)

Our curriculum lessons have been enhanced with the help of Abbeyfeale Rugby Club,  Abbeyfeale United, West Limerick Games Development Administrator David O'Dea, Tug of War workshop, Templeglantine G.A.A., Lilly Dooley Physiotherapist, Tournafulla G.A.A., Fr. Casey's G.A.A.
Seachtain Na Gaeilge Céilí, swimming lessons in Killeline for 6th class, trips to Crag Caves, a workshop from Skip N Rope,  and of course our hardworking Active Flag committee among others.

As part of the Move Well, Move Often programme we decided this year to concentrate on the strand of gymnastics and to focus on and develop our skills of landing and balancing. Our yoga lessons and skipping workshops have helped us with that.
We also assessed and developed our skills of running and walking.
Physical Activity
(Active playgrounds, Playground leaders, Playground equipment, Running games, Active Schools Week, Fitness Fridays in February, Sports Day, Green Day, Trails and Active Homework)

This has included  Playground Leaders on Thursdays, Fitness Fridays in February , co-ordinating with the Green Schools Committee for a Green Fun Day, co-operative games, treasure hunts and water games.
  Partnerships
(ASF Committee, Playground Leaders, Parental involvement, Questionnaires, Local sports clubs and teams)
We have had Fitness Fridays in February led by the Active School Committee, rugby with John Moloney and Trent, a cycling workshop,  a drumming workshop, soccer with past pupil Sarah O'Connor, lots of matches,  have taken part in competitions,  a running workshop with Great Limerick Run and have had some very special guests.
Some more photos from Active Schools Week 2019
These include obstacle courses, Zumba with Padraig, balloon games, Feale Fit games, stations and circuits with Mr Kennelly,  spud & spoon races, sack races, Tournafulla G.A.A.,  co-operative and outdoor games, Yoga with Claire, badminton with Mark, football with Buggy, basketball with Alan & Ruth, soccer with Sarah and much much more!
I think it's safe to say we have been a very active bunch and still had time for school work!
Some photos from previous activities, games and Active Schools Weeks are included too

This is our Active Schools Committee 2020 along with some past pupils

Our Running Initiative - Dromtrasna Challenge
Having followed a training programme (picture below), the pupils of Dromtrasna N.S. are encouraged to take part in the 2km Kids Run.
Some have taken on the challenge of the 5k and/or 10k Run or 4k Walk.
This is a very successful community event which has raised to date over 66,000 euro for Milford Hospice since its inception in 2014 by former parent and board member of the school Kieran Flannery.
We are very proud to be associated with and involved in this event.
The following photos show the participation of the pupils, past pupils, parents, staff, neighbours, friends and local business and community groups.
For more information and to support or take part in this event in the future please check out dromtrasnachallenge.com and support this worthy cause.

The following photos show Dromtrasna N.S. 's involvement and participation in the Dromtrasna Challenge since 2014 along with some newspaper articles advertising and documenting the event. Huge thanks to Kieran Flannery and JDM Photography for allowing us to use their photographs of Dromtrasna Challenge down through the years.
Active Breaks in November 2019 organised by Sixth Class
included Bizzy Break Activities, Running activities and Playground Games
Pupils were also involved in a cooking workshop called Supervalu Cooking All-Stars where they learned to prepare scrambled eggs, banana pancakes and even a delicious quesadilla. This was designed to teach primary school children the crucial life skill of cooking to ensure that the next generation is going to be healthier and more confident in the kitchen. The Cooking All Stars programme comprises of four lessons about food and cooking and four corresponding practical cooking lessons for the children to enjoy. The lessons and activities relate to the ‘Food and Nutrition’ strand of the SPHE curriculum while also providing opportunities for cross-curricular learning.
February 2020 Fitness Fridays
Activities included obstacle courses, bench ball, prison break, dodge ball, basketball with Alan
and yoga with Claire
Thanks to the committee for all the planning
